Frame Relay Data Services
The Department of Information Resources (DIR) provides access to the Internet for all State agencies and other eligible customers. Connectivity to the Internet is available statewide from speeds of 56K up to OC3. Internet service is procured by the DIR from several Internet providers including AT&T, Qwest, and SBC. One means of transferring data to and from the Internet is by use of Frame Relay.

About Frame Relay
Frame Relay is a term used to describe a data protocol or
format. More simply, user Internet data is converted into a special
format which better allows it to be transferred over a network.
The advantages of using frame relay is that it is a proven way
for users to communicate with distant offices and with other
Internet users using Internet data.
Before frame relay, it was common for customers to lease expensive
point-to-point circuits--usually several--as the
only way of connecting to the Internet. Users had to buy the
highest bandwidth they might ever need, even when they did not use
all of that available bandwidth around the clock, seven days a
week. Frame relay allows vendors such as
AT&T and SBC to offer much better rates
over conventional point-to-point circuits.
