TEXAN 2000 Point-to-Point Contracts

About Point-to-Point Circuits
Point-to-Point Circuits Offered Through TEXAN 2000 Contracts

Point-to-point circuits are one of the three methods used for data transport. The other two are Frame Relay and ATM. When customers order their own point-to-point circuits, it is to complete their own unique network design. DIR's own design for data transport is typically, to use Frame Relay or ATM over the TEX-AN 2000 virtual network backbone. However, individual customers may have requirements that do not fit this solution. Therefore, DIR TEXAN 2000 has prearranged contracts with nine different vendors around the State of Texas to provide traditional point-to-point circuits.

Customers are often interested in point-to-point circuits for Internet connections and to connect to their their nearest TEXAN backbone point-of-presence (POP). The Department of Information Resources recommends using either the TEXAN 2000 ATM or Frame Relay backbones whenever possible. The backbone most often begins at the POP. However, point-to-point circuits are sometimes the only solution to satisfy users' diverse requirement.

About Point-to-Point Circuits

The cost of point-to-point circuits is based on the amount of information that can be carried (bandwidth) and the distance the information is carried. Other costs include any equipment at either end that is needed to put the information on or to take it off the circuit. Like a highway, a point-to-point circuit is always "available" 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.

TEX-AN 2000 and the Future

Better contracts and new technology promise greater savings. The TEXAN 2000 network has leveraged that technology to again reduce costs and offer more service. First, TEXAN 2000 is a series of contracts that improves the bulk buying capacity of the State of Texas. Second, rates for access circuits have been postalized--greatly reduces the high cost for rural and small users. Third, improvements in the technology of backbone, long-haul circuits have made it possible to buy much better service, including higher data at lower rates. So, the State of Texas, DIR and TEXAN is de-emphasizing use of the older, more expensive, less efficient point-to-point private leased network. To the maximum extent, TEXAN is offering newer solutions that take advantage of postalized access rates, improved backbone technology and better contract prices.
