ATM Data Services
ATM is an acronym that stands for Asynchronous Transfer Mode.
Technically speaking, ATM is a protocol that is used to format user
data. More simply, user data is converted into a special format
which allows it to be transferred more easily and efficiently over a network.

The advantages of using ATM is that it allows Internet data,
video data and even voice data [See Note] to share the same communications pathway.
Thus, one "pipe" can carry all three services simultaneously.
Before ATM, it was common to have (and pay for) three separate
circuits--usually more expensive point-to-point circuits. Users
were limited to the bandwidth of each circuit and had to pay for
the circuit even when it wasn't being used, such as at night and on
weekends. ATM allows DIR contracted vendors to offer much better
rates over conventional point-to-point circuits.
NOTE: Ordinary analog telephone signals must be converted into data by
use of digital phones or Voice Over IP (VoIP) devices.
In the conceptual model, user data, whether Internet, video or
voice, is converted to an ATM packets by special ATM routers. The
information travels from the user's location to a distant end in
ATM format. At the distant end, the original information is
restored by another set of ATM routers.
