Routers and Related Equipment for Internet Service

Routers and other related equipment are key components of a connection to the DIR TEX-AN or WAN data network.

How Routers Work

A router is a piece of electronic equipment that converts data into a format that is suitable for a certain type of circuit, speed and level of service. Routers convert data no matter where it originates, whether from personal computers, video cameras, telephones, mainframe computers, etc. The router breaks a data stream up into manageable pieces. It then adds a few bits of routing instructions to the beginning and end of each piece (or packet) of data. In that way each piece is addressed and coded so that it won't get lost or forgotten. Then, the router on the far end can put the original message back together perfectly, for use by the distant end systems and users

Users' data leaves their location at their router. The data then follows access circuits to and through the virtual networks, such as TEX-AN or the Internet, on its way to the end user's location. End users must also have routers in order to properly receive the data.

How to Determine What is Needed

Working with your Telecom Solutions design representative, your requirements and existing equipment will be evaluated. The criteria for choosing a router can be very complex. The router selected must work with the type of data you want to send and the type of LAN(s) you have. It must also be designed for a particular data speed and bandwidth. And, it must be compatible with the type of backbone network and distant end network that you want to communicate with. Buying the latest technology and fastest systems is often not the cost effective choice. Please call 512-463-7800 or e-mail our DIR Telecom Solutions staff. They will assess your current system and your new requirements to design an optimal system that meets your needs at lowest possible cost.

Ordering Routers, Related Equipment and Internet Service

Other equipment you might need are CSU/DSUs, interfaces and adapters, internal wiring (to extend a demarc), etc. DIR holds contracts with various vendors for all types of networking equipment. Please visit our Networking & Equipment Web page for a complete list of products and vendors.
